Want to Stand Out in Your Niche? Fly Your Freak Flag.

flag business niche
Circus freak? Maybe not.

“Everyone has a freak flag; they just don’t fly it.”  These words uttered by Luke Wilson in the movie “The Family Stone” got me thinking.  What’s my freak flag?  Will I choose to fly it?  Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Now that you know the inner workings of my mind, you might be wondering what this has to do with your business.  Well, it has a lot to do with where you may rank in your niche.  With the birth of social media marketing came new ways to get a product or service in front of a consumer.  Small and large businesses alike have taken advantage of this avenue and some have come up with very creative ways to stand out from the crowd.  These people are the ones getting noticed-and getting customers to return.

Okay, so your marketing effort doesn’t necessarily have to be freakish-just different. Each of us has to decide what it is that makes us unique or better than everyone else out there in our field.  What do you have to offer that no one else does?  Perhaps it’s a particular service or way of doing business.  Maybe it’s the way that you go about getting your message across to the consumer.

Whatever it may be, we should all take advantage of the freedom to be creative.  Test the waters and come up with something new.  I know sometimes it can be hard to think outside the box.  I struggle with that myself as a virtual assistant when there are so many of us out there.

So, what’s my freak flag?  I have the uncanny ability to get total strangers to tell me the most intimate details of their lives without saying a word.  It’s true.  I must appear to be a very good listener.  It never ceases to amaze me when someone I don’t know says, “I don’t know why I’m telling you this, but I just feel like I can talk to you”.  There is something about me that tells people I am trustworthy.  I definitely am trustworthy and sensitive to others.  I  haven’t figured out exactly how I have been conveying this to total strangers, but I have taken the idea and run with it in my business.

The fact that a client feels that they can trust me is really what wins more business.  They know that their information is kept confidential and that I am reliable.  They are confident that their job is in the right hands.  My customer service skills really are the key to my business model.

This is just an example to get you thinking.  What’s your freak flag?  Are you going to fly it?  Please share your thoughts.

  1. Alicia, you are so right in this information! The best way to make sure your business grows is to keep differentiating yourself from your competition. You must continually strive to be better than your competitors, treat your clients with respect and dignity and set yourself apart.

You ARE trustworthy, and when others can recognize that before they know you well, you are definitely setting yourself up to be different!

This was a well-thought out post! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  2. Hello, I’m guessing you might have to see the movie to understand exactly what you mean by a freak flag, but I certainly get the thought behind it 😀 And I would have to whole-heartedly agree, that your abilities help you stand out in a crowd of your peers.
    Keep up the great work!

  3. Amy,
I’m glad you still got the meaning without seeing the movie–that means I did my job getting my point across. Standing out is definitely key. Thanks for the comment!

  4. I absolutely love your take on the ‘freak flag’ and how it relates to business! Totally awesome! And I think it’s definitely in your face (your eyes, maybe?) that people just feel that openness in them and trust you right away.
